The
Rock River Valley Racing Pigeon Club sponsored the Family Fun Pigeon
Expo July 17th 2010, held at Oppold Marina Park, Sterling, IL.
Racing Homers were on display as well as many other fancy breeds.
The public was encouraged to participate in pigeon races held
throughout the day. Pigeon 101 classes were taught and the 11 minute
version of Marathon in The Sky ran throughout the day. For a nominal fee
the public could send a message to friends by pigeons, or they
could send messages via pigeons to both the Governor of
the State of Illinois and the President of the United States. All
proceeds earned by the club for the event goes to support The Sauk
Valley Youth Racing Pigeon Program. The messages were successfully transported by
pigeon. Sarah Moore, the Illinois Governor's assistant,
received the messages for the Governor.
The event
also included a kids fishing tournament with lunch provided, and
prizes for all entrants. Games to play for the kids, a petting zoo and
firetruck rides also added to their enjoyment. Food was served by a
local troop of the Boy Scouts of America. Music was provided
by several persons playing acoustic instruments and a banjo picker. A
tribute to active armed service personnel and to all veterans
was presented. This included a release of White Birds of Peace.
Participants to the tribute included: The Boy Scouts of America,
the Future Farmers of America, The VFW, and The Marine Corps
League. The day was a total success with coverage from the
press, local radio, and television.
